Turbulent Heat and Mass Transfer in Axisymmetric Jets

The problem of turbulent mixing is examined with emphasis on mass, momentum, and energy transport in an axisymmetric free jet. An experimental investigation of the response of a pitot tube, a thermocouple and a sampling probe to a known periodic fluctuating flow with variable intensity of fluctuations is performed. The results indicate that the pitot tube response yields an adequate measure of the mean momentum flux in the incompressible range for any level of velocity fluctuation intensity in the direction of the probe axis. On the other hand, the thermocouple and sampling probe are found to be subject to significant errors in the measurement of mean temperature and mean concentration, respectively, in the high shear regions of a turbulent free jet. An experimental examination of the flow field of a turbulent axisymmetric free jet for non-homogeneous and non-isothermal conditions is performed. New probes are developed specifically for measuring these flux quantities.
