Abstract:

The components for the submarine launch and retrieval system of the support vessel RV Lulu were designed and fabricated in 1969, and during 1970 these components were installed into the completed system, tested, and in some areas, modified. A stress analysis was performed for all components of the hoist system considered essential to structural safety. The requirement was imposed that all such components have a minimum factor of safety of 5 based on yield strength. Two full scale torsion tests were done to verify a a suspected weakness in shaft keys, and b the performance after the subsequent change to double keys. Independent mechanical testing was done of the new keystock material to ascertain its compressive and shear strength properties.
