Abstract:
Diffusion-bonded electroless nickel plate was investigated as a wear- resistant coating for titanium alloys 6A1-6V-2Sn and 8A1-1Mo1V. Plate adhesion and diffusion zone structure were assessed by metallographic and X-ray diffraction techniques. Effects of the diffusion heat treatments on mechanical properties and wear characteristics of the titanium alloys were determined. The diffusion bonding produced a surface of nickel-rich intermetallics which significantly improved the wear resistance of the titanium alloys without any appreciable degradation of their structural integrity.
