Abstract:

The replacement partition function is formulated for crystals and it is concluded that 1 The replacement partition function is a well-defined fundamental quantity of the bulk crystal. 2 It is due to the translational and rotational motions of the clusters in the bulk for which all the atoms are fixed at the lattice points defined for each cluster, which is in agreement with the assertion by Lothe and Pound. 3 It is reasonable to ascribe the surface free energy of a cluster in vapor to the ratio of the internal partition functions of the cluster in vapor and in bulk crystal, respectively, which is also in agreement with the assertion by Lothe, Pound and co-workers.
