Abstract:

Superconducting weak links in various forms have the common feature that the supercurrent through the link is a periodic function of the gauge invariant quantum mechanical phase difference across the link the Josephson Effect. A convenient form of the relation is i sub s i sub c sin theta. The main qualitative features of devices derived from such weak links are derived according to analytically convenient relations. The total current through a weak link consists of three terms, the supercurrent i sub s i sub c sin theta, a normal current i sub n GV characterized by a conductance G and a displacement current i sub D - CdVdt characterized by the shunt capacitance C of the weak link. The interaction of these three terms with each other and with any external circuit elements leads to a rich variety of experimentally observable and useful phenomena. Various forms of these effects are described and explained. This phenomenon provides the basis of a fundamental voltage standard, and heterodyne and video detectors of high frequency radiation.
