Abstract:
Aromatic polyimides are produced in a two-stage condensation polymerization reaction of the dianhydrides of the aromatic tetracarboxylic acid with the aromatic diamines. The first stage of the reaction is usually carried out in a strongly polar solvent at room temperature and produces a solution of polyamic acid. The second reaction stage, the imidization, consists of a chemical, or thermal, treatment of the polyamic acid that had been precipitated from the solution. In the present work, the kinetics of the thermally induced imidization of a film of polypyromellitanic acid produced from the dianhydride of the pyromellitic acid and a diaminodiphenyl ether were investigated using IR absorption spectroscopy.
