Abstract:
Controlled eutectic Al-Si ingots were grown. Under the growth conditions of the investigation, it was necessary to raise the silicon content from 11.7 to 15.4 weight percent to eliminate aluminum dendrites. Fibrous, flake, and complex lamellar structures were observed in these ingots and appear to be a function of growth parameters and composition. Improvements in equipment and experimental technique will be necessary to provide more uniform growth speed, reduce oxidation, and insure homogeneity in composition. Author
