The objective of this program is to produce more efficient plasma pumps for pulsed Erglass lasers. Lamps using both noble gas xenon and alkali vapor plasmas are being investigated. Three glass and one YAG laser material have been selected for testing. Emission spectra of lamps are being measured and the excitation spectra and other optical properties of the laser materials are being examined as a basis for further improvement in lamp-laser energy transfer. Pumping effectiveness of the lamp-laser material combinations are being compared and overall laser efficiencies are being measured. Thirty-six xenon lamps have been constructed and tested in order to determine the effects of varying pulse length, pulse energy, bore diameter, and fill pressure of xenon lamps on the fluorescent light output of several Erglass and Er, YbYAG laser materials. Twelve alkali vapor lamps were constructed, and pumping effectiveness measurments were made as a function of several lamp parameters. Author
