Abstract:

Absorption spectra of Nd3 in single-crystal LiYF4 have been measured at 25 and 85K for the purpose of establishing the quadruplet I132 and quadruplet I152 ground-term energy levels. These energy levels and those published previously for the quadruplet I92 and quadruplet I112 multiplets were compared with theoretical energy levels. An rms deviation of 3.87cm was obtained between calculated and experimental energy levels. Comparisons of the spin-orbit parameters, the lamdan, with earlier work concerning Nd3 in CaWO4 suggests that the lamdan adequately describe the splitting of the free-ion energy levels. Therefore, these Bkm values might be expected to describe the effect of the crystal on the free-ion energy levels.
