Abstract:
The characteristics of transition radiation are investigated by modeling it as that due to a charged particle in uniform rectilinear motion changing its velocity abruptly to another constant value at any point of its trajectory in an unbounded homogeneous dielectric medium. When the particle velocities are much less than the phase velocity of electromagnetic waves, the equivalent source of transition radiation is found to be a Hertzian dipole situated on the particle trajectory at the location where the charge has a discontinuous change in its velocity and oriented along the direction of motion of the charge. Cerenkov wave is excited if the initial particle velocity is superluminal and is unaffected by the discontinuous change in the particle velocity. The characteristics of this Cerenkov wave are independent of the nature of the particle velocity after the transition. Author
