An instrument has been developed for observing the scattering of laser radiation from plasmas and solids by a superheterodyne detecting technique. The instrumentation involves primarily a carbon dioxide laser, beam splitters, a liquid helium cooled photoconductor, low noise amplifiers, and a synchronous detecting system. It has been applied to measurement of the scattering of 10.6 micron radiation from sound waves in KCl and to the analysis of the scattering of 10.6 micron radiation from plasmas. Author
