Abstract:

The matrix isolation technique was used to obtain the infrared spectra 4000-200cm of the high temperature species, AlF2, Al2F6, AlF, BeCl2, BeBr2, BeI2, 6LiNaF2, LiNaF2, 6LiAlF4, 7LiAlF4, and NaAlF4. A new method for determining heats of sublimation of high temperature materials was developed using the matrix isolation technique. The method was tested by determining the heat of sublimation of AlF3, and then applied to the lithium fluoride vapor system. Heats of formation were obtained for LiFg, Li2F2g-linear and Li2F2g-rhombohedral. The matrix technique was further extended to the analysis of unstable radical intermediates in pyrolysis reactions.
