Abstract:

The development of a special model aeroplane technique is reported which enables simple and illustrative experiments to be carried out in the Reynolds number regime from 1 to 5000. The models are built in an extremely light-weight construction with an all-up weight between 0.01 and 2 g, and a wing span between 0.1 and 1 m, flight velocities between 0.1 and 1msec can be reached. The requirement of extremely low wing loading, together with the special flow characteristics in this region, involves rather unusual construction materials, such as balsa wood, nichrome steel wire, and cellulose film the principles of construction are briefly reviewed. The problem of optimal propulsion for such model aeroplanes is treated analytically. Some results are given for flight performance optimization. By combining theory and experiment a method was found, among others, to determine the amount of power necessary for horizontal flight Schwebeleistung in order to optimize the flight duration of these models without exact knowledge of their aerodynamic behaviour. Some results are given with regard to flight characteristics under consideration of elasticities. Finally, the subject of indoor meteorology is briefly outlined. Author
