Abstract:

Over 500 foci of anthrax were registered from 1894 to 1968 on the territory of Dagestan. During the mentioned period 18,660 head of farm animals and 2,950 persons were infected. Analysis of anthrax morbidity for the last 19 years demonstrated that in 72.5 of the cases sick animals and infected raw material served as the source of infection. There were also cases of infection of human beings through the soil, insect bites and infected objects. Accidental infections in villages were much more frequent than infections in towns. Although the incidence of anthrax was the greatest in persons aged from 20 to 49 years, there were also cases of infection in children under 4 years of age and in persons over 60. Warm winters, often occurring in Dagestan, offer a possibility to tend the cattle almost all the year round. The animals, becoming infected in the pastures, create prerequisites for infection of human beings during the whole year. A steady decline of anthrax incidence was noted in recent years in Dagestan.
