Abstract:

A new instrument is described in which the readings of a single mercury-in-glass thermometer approximate to the wet bulb globe temperature index and therefore serve as a useful measure of the total heat stress imposed on man by his thermal environment. The thermometer bulb is located at the centre of a hollow blackened copper sphere which is covered by a moistened fabric jacket. Of several versions differing in jacket geometry, the most promising agrees with the WBGT index to within 1 degF in the range 70-90F WBGT for relative humidities ranging from 50 to 90. Author
