Good approximations for the potentials around condenser plate arrangements found in many pieces of equipment in electron optics can be had by passing a plane through the middle of the condenser and solving for a 2-dimensional potential in this plane. Except for the very simplest geometries, one cannot handle even this 2-dimensional problem very well. An iterative procedure is explained which can be used to get approximate 2-dimensional potentials in the neighborhood of a finite number of finite charged plates, whatever the geometry. For a simple geometry which occurs in the electrostatic lenses of cathode-ray tubes, convergence of the procedure was very fast. Author
