Abstract:

Using a match criterion expressed with the aid of logical operations, higher recall in SDI systems can be achieved through reducing the number of request aspects. Tests on a BESM-2M computer have been carried out to evaluate an optimum level of document-request match providing for adequate recall. The experimental file consisted of 2,100 documents, mostly detailed abstracts of foreign articles compiled in a special scientific-technical information unit and abstracts excerpted from VINITI abstract journals. Each document was indexed with an average of 13 descriptors, the maximum being 35. In order to adequately represent all the aspects, several indexers indexed every document. For the tests, real interest profiles of several hundred scientists were prepared. One or more requests per profile. The maximum number of descriptors in one request was 9. To cancel one, two, or more request aspects, experimental match criteria were formulated. Author
