Abstract:

The report defines in broad outlines the theory of the motion of an artificial earth satellite and the method of the practical determination of an orbit. A brief review is given of the various disturbing forces acting on the satellite, the earths potential, lunisolar potential, atmospheric drag, and radiation pressure, as well as the principle of the method of solving the equations of motion. The various means of tracking satellites are examined, with special stress on interferometric methods. The principle of practical determination of an orbit with the aid of interferometric measurements and the practical and theoretical purposes for observing satellites is given. Author
