Abstract:

Pike Island Dam spillway will contain nine 110-ft-wide bays, flow through which will be regulated by five submergible and four nonsubmergible tainter gates. Energy dissipation will be accomplished on a horizontal apron surmounted by baffle piers and an end sill. Model investigation of stilling basin performance was conducted in a 125-scale section model installed in a 1-ft-wide glass-sided flume. The original design basin resulted in undesirable types of basin action which were eliminated by relocating the baffle piers. The modified basin performed satisfactorily for flows from either the submergible or nonsubmergible gates.
