Results of preliminary tests run on a single juvenile male Atlantic bottlenosed dolphin, Tursiops truncatus, indicate a highly-developed passive sound localization ability for this species. For localization of pure tones, 20 kHz appeared to be the optimum frequency among those pure tones tested test signals as low as 1 kHz and as high as 60 kHz were used. Under the test conditions, signals of 3 seconds duration at 20 kHz were sufficient for complete-accurate localization at angles of 10 to 21 degrees. Author
