Pagination or Media Count:
A detailed design of 16mm, 19mm and 50mm accelerator systems, which have been installed at North Carolina State University at Raleigh for studying materials response to high strain rates resulting from high velocity impacts, is presented. The 16mm and 19mm accelerators have been used to produce maximum projectile velocities of 2025 feet per second and 1760 feet per second respectively while velocity data has not yet been fully established for the 50mm accelerator. Experience with these accelerator systems has shown that they meet all of the requirements stipulated for their use. Such accelerators, possessing a number of features required for research studies, may be fabricated readily by university shop facilities.
