This is a report of two half-day discussions by a group of technical specialists of the topic Standards as a Design Tool in Surface Specification for Mechanical Components and Structures. The objectives were the study of the role of standards in surface specification and the identification of needed contents for a practical design manual. Interest was centered on processed, metallic surfaces intended to be subjected to significant stresses andor environments, particularly surfaces of mating parts. Eight prepared talks, the ensuing audience discussions, and concluding recommendations are reported. Author
