A correlation exists between the increase of specific gravity and the decrease in osmotic resistance as storage time of red cells is prolonged to a period of 42 days. Young and old cells show differences in osmotic fragility, spontaneous hemolysis, activity of G-6-PD and ATP levels. Membrane preparations from the two groups of cells, upon fractionation by disc electrophoresis, demonstrate electrophoretic patterns which are qualitatively and quantitatively different. Author
