Mode Propagation in a Simplified Shallow Water Model.

The basic liquid-to-liquid wave-guide Pekeriss first model for sound propagation in shallow water is studied by using normal mode theory. The response to a harmonic point source is used for the derivation of the impulse response and an application for exponential explosion type sources is made. Signal shapes, including many modes for certain cases, are presented, together with other results relative to the dispersion relations of the wave-guide. These results can be used as a basis for the prediction of many sound propagation phenomena in liquid wave-guides. As a practical application for sonars, the contributions of each mode to the response in time for a given frequency band are presented. They show that, after some approximations, normal mode theory is of practical use even at sonar frequencies. Author
