Abstract:

Special observations using aerial photographs off the Caucasian coast of the Black Sea and in the Gulf of Riga of the Baltic Sea indicate that coastal currents in these areas have certain similarities. Their speeds and directions are related mainly to distance from the coast and not so much to geographic location or other circumstances. The observations made in conjunction with theoretical formulae characterizing coastal currents indicate that the mean velocity of surface coastal current increases with distance from the coastline. At a distance of 20-25km, the value is four times greater than at a distance of 0-1 km. It was further indicated that the increase of mean velocities is rapid at the beginning, but that starting with 4.5-6.5km from the coastline, the rate of increase slows down rapidly, being 6cmsec at a distance of 10km. Because the conclusions are based on a limited amount of data, they can be considered preliminary steps in the study of coastal currents with the aid of aerial photographs. Author
