The design and implementation of a new information system for the Registrars office at the Naval Postgraduate School was preceded by an analysis of the original punched-card record-keeping operation. Major goals for the new system included rapid grade reporting, feedback reports to increase data reliability, file security and disaster recoverability, data retrieval from current and historical data bases, and ease of input-output batch processing. Implementation was accomplished on an IBM System360 Model 67 operating under OS360. The information system utilized direct access storage devices and list-processing methods. Additional reports for professors, administrators, and students are planned utilizing the course, registration, professor, student, entrance-credit, and thesis-title files maintained on direct-access disk units. File expansion and future interfaces for the Registrars information system are discussed. Author
