Abstract:

The feasibility of obtaining arbitrary polarization in both one and two dimensional slot arrays was established. The arbitrarily polarized radiating element consists of a pair of cross slots which are cut in the side wall of a bifurcated rectangular waveguide. Vertical and horizontal polarizations are excited by the sum and difference modes in the bifurcated waveguide respectively. By superimposing the sum and difference modes in the proper amplitude and phase, any arbitrary polarization can be synthesized. An excitation assembly which consists of two 3-dB broadwall couplers and a one-bit phase shifter in each half of the bifurcated waveguide can provide four polarizations Vertical linear, horizontal linear, right and left handed circular polarizations. Experiments performed on this radiator indicates that the aperture distribution of an array of these cross slots has good phase quality for any arbitrary polarization. Furthermore, the polarization purity is also satisfactory. For example, measurements of an isolated cross slot show that the axial ratio for the cross slot operating in a circular polarization mode is approximately 0.25 dB. The element pattern of the cross slot is well behaved. Author
