Abstract:

Solar particle events affect the radiation environment in space through the immediate appearance of energetic particles in regions of space usually devoid of such particles and also through subsequent perturbations of the trapped radiation zones. These perturbations are associated with magnetic storms and occur a few days after a solar event. Solar particles with energies 50 keV have access to the earths polar caps solar protons with energies 1 MeV reach the synchronous altitude. Magnetic storms change the fluxes of trapped particles by orders of magnitude, with the changes generally being larger at higher altitudes. Author
