Electronic transitions have been examined in several classes of organoboranes which serve as models for carbonium ions. These are as follows borane carbonium ion, R3B R3C, ArnBOR 3-n ArnCOR 3-n and ArCH2-3B ArCH2CR2 where R is alkyl or hydrogen and Ar is substituted phenyl. The results indicate that organoboranes may serve as useful models for electronic transitions in carbonium ions and in some instances particularly tribenzylborane-phenonium ion models good correlation with carbonium ion ground state properties is found.
