Abstract:

A largely unresolved problem of linear potential flow theory has been that of the pressure singularity at the tip of lifting airfoils. In the paper, the nature of the singularity at a subsonic parabolic wing tip is described by presenting the complete solution for the circular wing in incompressible flow. It is shown in particular that it conforms to slender wing theory, but only at the tip point itself further, that the tip value of the lift coefficient is finite, but the lift distribution is not strictly elliptic. Logarithmic terms occur which produce the transition between the classical concept of an elliptic lift distribution and the predictions of slender wing theory. Author
