Abstract:

Circuitry to generate the timing marks in an electronically scanned radar system is described. The circuitry consists essentially of two shift registers located with the video processing ground electronics, and one shift register located with the antenna array. One of the ground shift registers provides signals to interrogate each of the range sample and hold circuits in each azimuth sector. The second shift register selects the azimuth sector to be interrogated. The shift register at the antenna array is synchronized with this second shift register and, through a decoder, selects the particular dipoles of the antenna array that radiate to form the radar beam for that azimuth sector. A breadboard version of the system was constructed. It has an effective antenna-rotation rate of 1.4 kHz, and is applicable to surveillance radar and air-traffic ground-approach installations.
