Abstract:

The effort demonstrated the feasibility of a solid-state VLF transmitter, in a moderate size package, that is capable of generating 4 kilowatts of power output. The report contains a technical description of the circuits used in the feasibility model transmitter, and describes its operation and its testing approach. It presents the test results and provides details of certain components used in the transmitter for which data may not be readily available. The transmitter is capable of supplying 4 kilowatts of output power for 1 hour, operating on a 50 percent duty cycle. The weight of the unit, including the battery, is 130 pounds and it measures 24 x 18 x 16 inches. The transmitter was successfully tested over a -60 to 100F range and at pressures equivalent to 45,000 feet altitude to ground ambient pressure. Although the transmitter proved feasibility of the concept, additional effort is recommended in investigation, trade-off analysis, and design to optimize the configuration with regard to packaging and component selection.
