The purpose of this study is to investigate the application of Relational Data Systems to intelligence data processing. A relational data system is one that has the capability not only to retrieve specific facts but also the ability to deduce facts that are implicit rather than explicit in the data base. The report reviews eight current systems that are representative of the research in relational data systems. These systems are Question-answering system-3.5 CONVERSE Association storing processor Rapidly extensible language Relational data file Relational system structure Teachable language comprehender Question-answering machine. The nature of intelligence data processing is explored in the report and a specification of criteria for the evaluation of relational data systems in intelligence applications is provided. The technology of relational data systems is evaluated critically in light of the specified criteria. The specification of the functional requirements of an experimental relational data system to be used to focus research in this area is presented. Author
