Abstract:

The spillway at Hannibal Dam will consist of eight 110-ft-wide bays through which flow will be regulated by tainter gates. Energy dissipation will be accomplished in a stilling basin consisting of a horizontal apron, baffle piers, and an end sill. Model investigations were conducted on a 136-scale section model which reproduced one central gate bay and approximately half of each adjacent gate bay. Tests were concerned with discharge characteristics, stilling basin performance, and riprap requirements for the transition downstream from the gate bay and the fixed-crest weir adjoining the left abutment. The spillway rating curves were determined for both full and partial gate openings. The size of protective stone required for adequate protection of the transition downstream from the gate bay and the fixed-crest weir was determined. Author
