Abstract:

The heat exchange between the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga is based on water exchange through the Irbeni Vain neglecting the insignificant quantity of water exchange occurring through Viire Kurk Strait 3 miles wide. Since the water flowing northward through the Irbeni Vain brings additional heat into the Gulf of Riga, whereas the water flowing in oppisite direction takes out some of the cold, the temperature and volume of inflowing and outflowing waters must be known. The data are based on systematic measurements of water temperature, sea level fluctuations, winds and wind currents, which have been conducted at the lighthouse Kolka, lightship Ovisi, Ventspils, Liepaja, and elsewhere. Thus the monthly and yearly averages, as well as maximums and minimums, of heat influx into and efflux of the Gulf of Riga are found and their relationship to wind pattern and climatic conditions in the region is established. With the aid of diagrams, the heat budget is drafted and the frequencies of heat influx and efflux expressed in percentages and calories by seasons and years is determined. Author
