An equation for calculating for anesthesia the delivered gas flow and concentration necessary to supply the dose per kg per unit time patient requirement is presented. This equation takes into account the predictable losses of anesthetic to rubber and soda lime in non-rebreathing systems, losses of inspiratory gas from the respiratory dead space and alveolar losses. The whole body requirement for fluroxene was calculated by summation of the individual organ rates of uptake which in turn was calculated from known organ weights, blood flow, and measured tissue solubilities.
