Abstract:

A test stand has developed which makes it possible to simultaneously measure the total friction moment of four ball bearings, and to investigate friction losses in the ball bearings under various radial load conditions and shaft speeds, over a wide range of low temperatures down to minus 100 degrees. The stand is described in some detail, and it is designed to test medium-size ball bearings at speeds from 0 to 5,000 rpm. Radial forces up to 1500 kg can be exerted on the bearings. A balanced-bridge measuring system connected to an oscillograph through an amplifier is used to measure friction. Liquid nitrogen in a cavity adjoining the bearings is used to reduce the temperature.
