Abstract:

An analysis is conducted to establish the bounds of the carbon solid-liquidus-vapor phase diagram. Included in the analysis is an assessment of the graphite triple-point experiments. Results of the analysis indicate that the triple-point experimental data are in error by as much as 600K. Correspondence of the sublimation and fusion of graphite is obtained the calculated results remove much of the disparity between triple-point temperatures and sublimation temperatures reported in the literature and provide definition of the liquid-vaporization pressure-temperature relation for graphite. These quantities are then utilized to describe the extent of their influence on nose tip surface recession and thermal response of a high-performance re-entry vehicle. Author
