The effects of a the presence or absence of a Peer Group Audience and b high or low potential belt velocity on treadmill walking speed were studied in two experiments using 18 volunteer soldiers. In both experiments Ss were instructed to walk as fast as they could for 10 minutes. The presence or absence of an audience had no effect on walking speed while potential belt velocity interacted with order of presentation of velocities such that Ss slowed down when potential belt velocity range was decreased but did not speed up when potential velocity was increased.
