Methods are proposed for the determination of diisopropyl phosphonate in sebacatebase semi-fluid lubricants volumetrically, gravimetrically, and spectrophotometrically. In these methods the organic matter is destroyed by treating with nitric acid, evaporating to fumes of perchloric acid, and dropwise addition of nitric acid to the fuming solution. Empirical factors obtained by carrying KH2PO4 through the procedures are used. In the spectrophotometric method the phosphorus is determined by use of the phosphovanadomolybdate color developed in the perchloric acid medium. All three methods check each other reasonably well. Quality assurance requirements are given for diisopropyl phosphonate. Total phosphorus is determined by first treating the sample with a mixture of bromine and nitric acid, evaporating to fumes of perchloric acid, and determining the phosphorus volumetrically or gravimetrically. Methods and results are also given for the monoisopropylphosphonate content, pH, chloride content, density, and refractive index. Author
