An attempt was made to derive the degeneracy factor of Eyrings Significant Structure Theory for a particular model of a solid with vacant lattice sites. A form was obtained which differs from that obtained by Eyring and which gives results less satisfactory than Eyrings factor when compared with Hugoniot data. Some equilibrium Hugoniot states are calculated for a mixture of two materials and the formulae are applied to combinations of quartz- like and polyethylene-like materials. Some elastic calculations are made for various composite configurations. It is noted that conditions of uniaxial strain are violated, and that the relations between mean pressure and volume are sensitive to the boundary condition on the face of the composite. Conventional methods for reducing ultrasonic velocity data taken at high pressures require a priori knowledge of the compressibility as a function of pressure if elastic constants are to be calculated. An iterative procedure is outlined which makes it possible to determine the elastic constants provided only that ambient pressure values of thermal expansion coefficient, its temperature derivative, and specific heat at constant pressure are known.
