Equation of State of the Alpha and Epsilon Phases of Iron.

An empirical equation of state that is thermodynamically consistent is found for the alpha body-centered-cubic and epsilon hexagonal-close-packed phases of iron. A FUNCTIONAL FORM OF THE Helmholtz potential is formulated from general considerations of lattice vibrations, conduction electrons, and ferromagnetic exchange interaction. The Helmholtz potential is adjusted to get a fit to calorimetric, thermal expansion, acoustic, static compression, and shock data. The Gibbs potential corresponding to this fit is used to describe the alpha- epsilon phase transition. Numerical calculational procedures are developed for mixed phases in equilibrium and for time- dependent transformation. Author-PL
