Abstract:

The paddle-press response of an Atlantic bottle-nose dolphin Tursiops truncatus was studied in a free operant situation and compared to performance in short exposures to several partial reinforcement schedules. In a broader investigation, conditioning under a variable ratio schedule produced more responses, at a greater rate, and for a longer time period, than did conditioning with continuous reinforcement. After conditioning on the ratio schedule, responding continued in the absence of reinforcement for a long period of time. Author
