Abstract:

The objectives of this program are to design, fabricate, and evaluate a plasma-panel display device having a three-color capability, and to investigate and develop a technique for operating such a device with at least three levels of intensity. The vacuum-ultraviolet excitation spectra of 10 oxygen-dominated phosphors were measured to assist the selection of those most readily excited by the ultraviolet emission from a Xenon plasma discharge. A phosphor deposition technique involving the use of a thermally tackifiable photo-polymer was extended to the preparation of multi-color panels. An appropriate thermal cycle was established for pyrolysis of the photo-polymer and attachment of phosphor spots to the dielectric surface as dots or donuts. Means for achieving good electrodephosphor alignment have been identified, and progress has been made in control of registration during panel sealing.
