Shock tube experiments to measure the Fe O2 gas phase reaction rate and the FeO fundamental band intensity, by using iron penetacarbonyl as a source of iron atoms, are described. A lower bound for the reaction Fe O2 kl to FEO O of K1 3 X 10 to the 12th cu cmmole sec for T or 2400K and an integrated fundamental FeO band intensity of 450ama sq cm are reported. In addition the rate of vibrational relaxation of CO by Fe-atoms for T 1400-1900K is given. Calculations for similar experiments on Al O2 by the use of trimethylaluminum as a source of aluminum atoms are presented. Author
