The study is organized into two parts, the first of which is concerned with the nature of the Ankole market system in 1968. It begins with an overview of the survey area, including a discussion of field procedures and methods, by a typology of markets, a comparative analytical profile of African traders based on some 900 interviews, and an analysis of the spatial behavior of market consumers. Part 2 endeavors to place the contemporary marketing system in historical perspective. Author
