Abstract:

The program studied was a small rehabilitation unit housing 100-140 military enlisted men convicted by Special or General Court-Martial of various offenses ranging from AWOL to manslaughter. The objective of the unit is to improve each individuals functioning in society and, where possible, to return him to active duty in the Air Force for the balance of his enlistment or longer. The report explains how the milieu of an institution can be used in a resocialization approach. Fourteen questionnaire scales measuring norms, attitudes, and role perceptions are presented and their meaning represented in such a way that the scales can be used to measure the potential for resocialization. Scale, reliability, and validity are documented. The background of intensive in-service training of staff in the Retraining Group is given and related to the question of improved resocialization.
