Abstract:

A general solution has been developed for the melting of solid materials, including a phase transition in the one- and two-dimensional models requiring a minimal amount of computer time and space and using a nonstandard finite difference approach. Accuracies of 1 in temperature profiles with time can easily be achieved. Both of these programs will handle a wide range of heating power levels and any desired thickness of liquid layer retained. Techniques developed in the one-dimensional case have served as helpful guidelines for the more complex two-dimensional burnthrough times and temperature profiles have aided in separating out the effects of radial heat conduction and geometry.
