Von Neumann has characterized a one-dimensional detonation wave as a shock wave in the unreacted explosive followed by a reaction zone which ends at a region designated the Chapman-Jouguet plane. Throughout this model there are several points that are important to the physical understanding of the detonation process and to its military and scientific application. These points are the Chapman-Jouguet pressure, the von Neumann spike pressure and the reaction zone length. Measurements were made of phenomena closely associated with these detonation parameters and values for them are inferred where possible. When difficulties exclude a definitive result the problem is analyzed and possible courses of future action indicated. The two explosives that have been selected for this study are cast TNT and cast Octol.
