Abstract:

A study has been made of the polymerization of bisallyloxmethyl phosphinates of a given general formula and copolymerization of these phosphinates with methylmethacrylate MMA. The study was undertaken because polymers of this type exhibit valuable properties such as enhanced fire resistance or good adhesion to metals. The esters alone did not polymerize, but yielded copolymers with MMA in MMAphosphorus-containing monomer ratios of 964 to 8416. The copolymers were solid transparent blocks insoluble in the usual solvents of polymethylmethacrylate. The thermomechanical curves are characteristic of cross-linked systems. Starting mixtures containing over 20 percent organophosphorus monomers yielded rubber-like products. The swelling curves of the polymers in dichloroethane indicated that swelling is accompanied by weight losses as a result of the extraction of low-molecular-weight products from the swollen polymer.
